eighteen: the year of release, 2018. eighteen: the age at which i first used a synthesizer. in creating eighteen i worked independently in the studio, initially building up tracks with synthesizers and found sounds recorded in my daily comings and goings. after working with the tracks over a period of months, i shared them with a few musicians, who added their own instrumental layers. though working independently, we all shared a similar working process: working in our personal recording spaces, as opposed to larger recording studios.

after a little hiatus hamids h+ ( hpls ) returns with the addition of dcha-dcha to its roster. the latter debuts on the label with opus incertum, a ten trackers album split across two parts, each packing a compelling assortment of sonic swindles and trickeries. opus incertum showcases a subtle mixture of slow and fast, with each track having its own colors and twists but yet achieving to remain part of a cohesive assemblage delicately crafted for your listening pleasure. artwork from: kieran behan

super deep african / new age / minimalistic / ambient crossover from cabo verde - not the typical record, a beautiful listening experience check! originally conceived as a book of 6 poems that developed into a record released independently in 1986, universo da ilha sits at the cross-section of many different genres. connecting contemporary new age and ambient minimalist movements with traditional west african and cape verdean elements from the past (griot voices, djembe rhythms, melancholic morna), vasco constructed his own universe where, in spite of the isolation of the island at the time, he transcended barriers and created a global record that was ahead of its time vasco used his own synths and drum machines, and with the help of a small group of friends (tey gonçalves on percussion, neney’s amazing griot voice, luis morais on sax and flute), he recorded this not-balearic-but-atlantic ambient odyssey on a 16-channel peavey mixer directly to an akai tape recorder without overdubs.

hot shots of reggae is an recording on which a bunch of popular reggae songs are brought together. the album was originally released in the autumn of 1970 and compiled by the legendary chinese-jamaican producer leslie kong. he had enjoyed many hits in in europe and selected some of the true pearls from the reggae music to shine on the album. the album includes the maytals hit monkey man, the sparkling so much love by joe white and the fine rythms of ken boothe’s freedom street. the influential producer leslie kong once discovered jimmy cliff and recorded him on his own record label beverley’s. in 1962 he recorded bob marley’s first single and through the 60’s het became known as the producer of many big artists, like desmond dekker and joe higgs. he died of a heart attack, at the age of 38, in august 1971.

ryo murakami is based on osaka entered the world of music playing piano at an early age, then was devoted to synthesizers and drum machines. his productions contain alternative dance music and classical contemporary music, a combination of atmospheric ambient, noise and drone. his production history had been varied up until his album released on his own imprint depth of decay in 2013 since between releases on bug’s poker flat, the dessous label and the more recent releases on german outlets baud and styrax.

a year after his debut outing on the label, max essa makes a welcome return to hell yeah with the han zon roc ep, which is another of his impossibly laidback offerings. essa is of course the long time uk talent who has become a part of the balearic mafia thanks to releases on labels like aficionado, music for dreams, and his own jansen jardin. this is the second coming together of artist and label and is another timeless excursion far out to sea. opener han zon roc (midori coup) is an epic 12inch minute adventure that slowly awakens your spirit with new age guitar plucks and heavenly ambience before organic drums slowly being to drift into earshot. they grow ever larger as synths start to spray about the mix, hand drums pitter patter and big chords bring the soul-shine. its like the soundtrack to an afternoon boat party all condensed into one brilliant cut. how you showed me everything then gets super chill with lazy drum tumbles, bendy guitar lines and scattered hits. withering cosmic chords colour the airwaves and its a track that will slow your heartbeat to nothing. last of all, rain birds alfalfa jam is a analogue drum work out with early 90s hip hop influences and diving basslines. it s light and airy, nimble and playful and of course filled with the sort of tropical rays that make all of essa works so brilliantly escapist.

in 1989, an italo-house act sueño latino released a self titled track, which went on to become one of the most revered electronic music records of all time. louis botella is now set to release a sensational remake on emerald city this september. the track itself samples part of manuel göttsching’s influential e2-e4, an album known for its role in the development of house and techno. fast forward to 2018 and the record is again set to be revived thanks to louis botella, and with the blessing and support of göttsching and expanded music. on his interpretation of the track, louis has stayed true to the original, replaying each part and adding an extra dimension to the tracks through a sparkling piano topline, a new vocal hook and dreamy arpeggiations. louis’ passion for the art of djing was sparked from a young age. at sixteen he got his first gig at a club in luxemburg and released his first record in 1998. since then, he’s released on respected labels such as classic music company, ovum records and poker flat recordings.

super smooth release on nny records full of lush and sensual tracks. on the a side we can listen to nicson (flumo recordings) who delivers an excellent straight to heaven in a deep-house 90s mood, full of energy and class, after him f. vinuesa (solid tapes) approaches lo-fi and acid paths with highlands, a tune that is is capable of transporting you to another dimension. on the b side mateis e. aqir (jungle gym records) presents natural sense, a track that also takes you to a different dimension, this time more oriented to open spaces, in a balearic and new age mood fused with a leftfield touch which is a delight, and to close the compilation we have the great work of i see you in the plants, the new aka by pablo diskko for productions in an ambient techno-dub wave that absorbs you and catches you. a superb and an essential work.

currently the rediscovery of long forgotten japanese electronic, jazz and new age music is at a peak like never before. but although many re-issues already flood the record stores around the world: the large, diverse musical culture of japan still got some gems in store that are really missing.

following on from angophora s beautiful long player, ken oath is back with another full length lp from low flung. friends of the label will note that this is his third release for ken oath, and it s a fittingly mature and expansive statement for a debut lp. perhaps mature is the wrong word here, as all his brilliant ideas are backed up by a sense of whimsy that betrays his playful side. the music strikes a balance between styles and spaces that could perfectly soundtrack moments at home, in the club, and in the liminal spaces between. danny s efforts at writing dance music still contain the idiosyncratic approaches of his ambient works: the deadly deep subs and endless echo spirals on -rising damp- sounds like someone trying to piece together a drum & bass track after an off-hand conversation about the genre. he s transmuted the propulsive energy of jungle into something no less dynamic, full of stops and starts and sonic pressure but flush with space. -tarp climber- is at heart a rollicking digi-dub. the more ambient moments of the lp are equally captivating - the glassy tones of -frozen coat- sound like a space-age ensemble soundtracking a floating lounge on a suite of glass instruments, while -ocean grove- blends field recordings and dreamy synthesizer melodies to create an uncanny sense of place that unroots you from wherever you re listening. there s a heavy emphasis on danny s collaborators as well - the cold emotion duo is reprised on the spacey ‘hills hoist’. closer -bacchus marsh- is a collaboration with prophets, a cross-state ensemble that defy any easy categorisation. the music here flirts with jazz and minimalism but with a dubwise production aesthetic to produce something that recalls khan jamal s visionary -drum dance to the motherland- in spirit and practice, but this whole album sounds as otherworldly and one-of-a-kind as the aforementioned lp.

whether thought of as a fistful of small change or as a digitally distributed asset, monetary exchange is best calculated for aesthetic ends at the planetary scale. zoom out, and as far as you can. yen towers is copenhagen’s simon formann, known for his work as a member of lower and age coin. “bidders must justify their price” tracks the mechanisms of global exchange and scales sound system dynamics to fit, preserving only the minimum quantity of human perspective necessary to calibrate itself for advanced club environments.

hailing from the mists of the early 90s uk techno scene, ramjac corporation s -cameroon massif!- epitomises everything great about the anything goes spirit of the scene prior to firm genre boundaries being established. emotional rescue have done the right thing and brought the vintage curio back to light, and what a return it is. while it shows its age, it sounds in fine fettle, all rolling breaks, trancey zaps and mysterious vocal hooks that positively draw you into a transcendental rave headspace. both the -massive- and -massing- mixes are essential, but then you also get the added bonus of a live version from a reunion gig back in 2009.

“a dreaming island” is an elegy to hedonistic isle living , drifting in and out through 6 balearic-tinged varieties all referencing various styles of early to late 90’s house music & new age tropes.
on the a side, you’ve got a prelude of sorts in “a storm” followed by the panpipe delirium of “organ of evening calm” while we signal halftime with the breaks’n’bouncey moves of “a dreaming island”.
b side gets trent-y with the beautiful “mermaid dive”, then gets heart wrenching thru the midi guitar shredding of “awake my friend” and sails away with the conclusion “a sea”.

following his recent release on the see double va, rising talent josh baker finds a home once again on luca cazal and brigante’s imprint with his explore ep. original fuse london resident rich nxt is also onboard to deliver an elevating remix. first supported by romanian master barac, title track explore is a surefire weapon for the dancefloor. jaxn’s breathy vocals effortlessly complement the peak-time bass and glistening hi-hats. on the b-side, rich nxt adds a funkier bassline and light keys for his rework of the title track. the ep closes with black lines, a more formidable number with baker employing darker elements into his production. the talented producer explains “ after receiving some exceptional vocals from jaxn, ‘explore’ wrote itself. i wanted to create a real peak-time song, one suited for all spaces and i’m happy to see it get consistently road-tested at dc10. ‘black lines’ is a moodier acid track that i feel compliments ‘explore’ massively.” since the tender age of 16, josh baker s passion and enthusiasm for house music has grown from strength to strength. the young manchester producer also curates his own successful night, you&me, which has since gone on to take place in leeds, newcastle and ibiza. his musical output has garnered support from big names such as apollonia, richy ahmed, ben rau and rich nxt
